Ms. Elevease Quiz: Name the Vitamin also Known as “The Sunshine Vitamin”…
The answer is Vitamin D! Vitamin D gets its nickname – The Sunshine Vitamin because it’s produced in our skin with the help of the UV light from the sun.
Vitamin D is particularly important for our bones as it aids the absorption of calcium which makes them strong.
If you have a Vitamin D deficiency this can be particularly dangerous to the older community as it can lead to osteoporosis or osteomalacia (bone softening).
In some countries like the UK and Ireland, we have very little exposure to UV light during the year meaning that we need to consume food and drinks that have a good source of Vitamin D in order to keep our bones good and strong as we get older. Here’s some foods that you should stock in your kitchen:
Salmon, Sardines, Eggs, Shrimp, Milk (Fortified), Tuna, Orange Juice (Fortified). If you’re not a big fan of Fish try the fish liver oils to get your daily supplement in.
Until next time,
